Desaru Resort Getaway: Ferry, Resorts and When Not to Swim

Desaru works best as a resort weekend, not a beach holiday. The sand is long and the resorts are good, but for a large part of the year the sea is too rough to swim in, so the trip lives or dies on choosing the right resort and the right pool. Get that choice right and it is one of the easiest short breaks you can take from Singapore.

This guide is for couples, families and small groups planning one or two nights. It covers how to get there by car or by the one daily ferry, which of five resorts suits which traveller, what is worth doing outside the resort, and a realistic two day, one night plan.

One distinction matters before you book. Desaru Coast is a planned resort development with four hotels, the Adventure Waterpark and The Els Club golf course. The wider Desaru area around Bandar Penawar, in Johor’s Kota Tinggi district, has older resorts, the fruit farm and the seafood towns. Several things on this page sit outside the development, and you will need a car or a transfer to reach them.

Details checked 26 October 2026. Prices, schedules and opening hours change, so confirm before you go.

1. Desaru at a Glance: The Practical Details

DetailWhat to know
LocationEast coast of southern Johor, Malaysia, facing the South China Sea, around Bandar Penawar in the Kota Tinggi district
By carAbout 1.5 hours from the Woodlands Checkpoint, per Desaru Coast’s own estimate, plus however long the border queue takes
By ferryBatamFast from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal to Desaru Coast Ferry Terminal, Thursday to Monday only
Ferry times10:10 from Tanah Merah, 17:30 back from Desaru Coast (schedule effective 15 October 2026)
Ferry fareS$70 one way or S$108 return, fees included, same price for all ages
Crossing timeAbout 1.5 hours
Getting aroundDesaru Coast runs a hop on, hop off shuttle within the development; anything outside it needs a car or taxi
Best time to goApril to October for calmer seas; avoid sea swimming in the northeast monsoon, roughly November to February or March
Time neededTwo days and one night is enough for one resort and one outing
CurrencyMalaysian ringgit (RM) for everything local; resorts usually quote in ringgit too

The ferry is the detail that catches people out. There is one sailing each way, and it does not run on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Desaru Coast says extra sailings are added over festive seasons and long weekends, so check the BatamFast schedule for your dates before you book a room.

2. Getting to Desaru From Singapore

Driving

Driving gives you the most freedom, and you will want a car if you plan to eat in Sungai Rengit or visit the fruit farm. Desaru Coast puts the drive at about 1.5 hours from the Woodlands Checkpoint and 1.2 hours from Johor Bahru. The road part is predictable; the checkpoint is not. On a Friday evening or the eve of a public holiday, the border can add more time than the drive itself.

  • Leave early on a Thursday or Saturday morning rather than Friday evening
  • Come back on a Monday or a Sunday morning, not Sunday evening
  • If you are coming from the airport, Desaru Coast puts Changi Airport at about two hours away

If you are planning a longer Johor loop, our Johor Bahru travel guide covers the city you pass on the way.

The ferry

The BatamFast ferry from Tanah Merah is the calmer option if you do not want to deal with the causeway. It leaves Tanah Merah at 10:10 and leaves Desaru Coast at 17:30, and the crossing takes about an hour and a half. You clear immigration at both terminals, so arrive at Tanah Merah well ahead of departure.

The schedule shapes the whole trip. You land late in the morning on day one and leave in the late afternoon of day two, which gives you nearly two full days for one night. It also rules out a Tuesday or Wednesday departure entirely.

At S$108 return per person, the ferry costs more than driving for a family of four, so it makes most sense for couples and solo travellers. Check with your resort about a transfer from the ferry terminal: the Desaru Coast shuttle covers the development’s own hotels, while resorts outside it arrange their own pickups.

3. Best Resorts in Desaru

There are five realistic choices. Four belong to the Desaru Coast development; Lotus sits in the older beach area along Jalan Desaru. None of them is the “best” for everybody, so here is who each one suits.

The Westin Desaru Coast Resort

The all-rounder. The Westin sits directly on the beach, with 275 rooms facing either the sea or the gardens, the Heavenly Spa by Westin, and a kids club. It is the right pick if you want the beach on your doorstep without paying villa prices.

  • Best for: couples and families who want a calm, beachfront stay
  • Watch out for: the beachfront advantage is limited during the monsoon, when you will be using the pool, not the sea

Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast

The family choice, because of what is next door. Hotel guests reach Adventure Waterpark directly from Level 1, and booking direct with the hotel includes complimentary waterpark access during your stay. The Roxity Kids Club is free for direct bookings too, and the Studio Suite has a king bed plus a bunk bed for two children.

  • Best for: families with children who will spend most of the day in the water
  • Watch out for: it is not on the beach. The hotel runs a free buggy to the sand, which takes a few minutes. If a beachfront room matters to you, pick the Westin

Anantara Desaru Coast Resort and Villas

The romantic option. Beyond its sea view rooms and suites, Anantara has lagoon pool villas and larger residences, many with their own private pool. That makes it a good pick for couples, and for families or groups who would rather share one large villa than book several rooms.

  • Best for: couples, honeymooners and groups sharing a villa
  • Watch out for: the private pool villas are where the value is; a standard room here costs more without delivering much that the Westin does not

Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast

The newest name, though not a new building. The former One&Only Desaru Coast reopened as Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast on 5 February 2026. It is a 44 key, all suite resort set on 128 acres of rainforest, with daily activities such as guided nature walks and archery and a children’s programme.

  • Best for: travellers who want privacy, space and a high level of service
  • Watch out for: the group has said refurbishments and new dining, spa and recreation concepts will roll out progressively, with no published timeline. Ask what is open on your dates before you book

Lotus Desaru Beach Resort and Spa

The value and big group option. Lotus has 793 apartments, suites and penthouses across 18 blocks, from one bedroom units up to a four bedroom family duplex. It has its own SPLASH water park, a seafood restaurant and several other places to eat, so a large family can stay put.

  • Best for: large families and groups who need several bedrooms under one roof, and budget conscious travellers
  • Watch out for: it is not part of the Desaru Coast development, so the development’s shuttle, waterpark perks and Els Club are a drive away. Do not expect the polish of the four branded resorts

Prices move with dates and promotions, so treat the last column as a ranking, not a quote. Compare the total trip cost, including transport and the waterpark, rather than the room rate alone.

5. Things to Do in Desaru

Adventure Waterpark Desaru Coast

This is the main event for families. The park has more than 20 rides, slides and attractions and the region’s largest wave pool. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 and is closed on Tuesdays, except during public and school holidays, when it opens every day.

Before you plan a day around it, check the official site. At the time of writing, the park lists the Surfwall as temporarily unavailable, the Kids Ahoy! area as closed for upgrades, and the Tidal Wave as open with limited wave activity. For families with young children, that is a real reduction.

  • Height rules: several of the bigger slides, including The Tempest and Riptide, need riders to be at least 122 cm; children under 122 cm are limited to selected rides
  • Tickets: priced separately for Malaysian and non-Malaysian visitors; buy on the official booking site, and compare against a Hard Rock direct booking, which includes access
  • Time needed: most of a day with children; half a day without

Desaru Beach

The beach is long, sandy and lined with palms, and it is good for a walk at any time of year. Swimming is another matter. The east coast faces the northeast monsoon, and from roughly November to February or March the surf and undercurrents make the sea dangerous.

This is not a theoretical warning. In early September 2026, as the district moved into the monsoon transition, the New Straits Times reported three separate beach incidents in Kota Tinggi in four days, including four teenagers swept away at Pantai Tanjung Lompat in Bandar Desaru. Police urged the public to stay out of the sea. If you see a red flag, do not go in.

Desaru Fruit Farm

The best dry land outing. The farm grows over 100 species of tropical fruit trees, from ciku and passion fruit to cocoa and robusta coffee, alongside a petting zoo, a herb garden and a bee talk with local honey. Guided tours explain what you are looking at, which is the reason to go.

  • Entry: RM40 for adults and RM35 for children when Bernama visited in November 2025, with activities sold separately; check the current price
  • Getting there: it sits outside the Desaru Coast development, so you need a car or a taxi
  • Time needed: two to three hours
  • Who it is not for: anyone hoping to pick durian. Treat it as a fruit and farm tour, not a durian buffet

Seafood in Sungai Rengit

The fishing town of Sungai Rengit, in the Pengerang area south of Desaru, is where people drive for seafood. Lobster in superior broth and cereal lobster are the dishes to order. If you are not driving, the seafood restaurant at Lotus Desaru is the closer option, and the resorts all have their own restaurants.

Prices here are by weight and market rate. Ask for the price of the lobster or crab before it goes into the wok, not after it arrives at the table.

6. Suggested 2 Day, 1 Night Desaru Itinerary

This plan assumes the ferry. If you drive, shift everything an hour or two earlier.

Day 1

  • 10:10: Ferry from Tanah Merah; arrive about an hour and a half later
  • Midday: transfer to your resort, drop bags, lunch on site
  • Afternoon: pool or beach time; Hard Rock families head straight into the waterpark
  • Evening: seafood dinner in Sungai Rengit if you have a car, or at your resort if you do not

Day 2

  • Morning: breakfast, then the beach while it is still cool
  • Late morning to mid afternoon: pick one main outing, either the waterpark or the fruit farm, not both
  • 17:30: ferry back to Tanah Merah

Two outings on one day sounds efficient and is not. With a 17:30 ferry, a tight schedule and the transfer back, trying to do both is how families end up rushing the one they came for.

A third night makes sense if you want both the waterpark and the fruit farm, or if you are driving and want to avoid the Sunday evening border queue.

7. Worth It or Skip It?

✅ Worth it if

  • You want a short break from Singapore with resort facilities rather than a city
  • You have children who will happily spend a day in a waterpark
  • You can travel Thursday to Monday, when the ferry runs
  • You are going between April and October, when the sea is usually calmer
  • You want a private pool villa for a couple or a group at a shorter distance than Bali or Phuket

⛔ Skip it if

  • Swimming in the sea is the point and you are going between December and February. Malaysia’s west coast is usually in its drier season then, so look at our Langkawi guide instead
  • You want island snorkelling and clear water. Mersing, the jumping off point for Johor’s east coast islands, is the better base; see our Mersing guide
  • You can only travel on a Tuesday or Wednesday and do not want to drive
  • You want nightlife or a walkable town. Desaru is resorts, a golf course and quiet roads
  • You are planning a waterpark trip around rides that are currently closed. Check the park’s notices first

8. Practical Tips for Planning a Desaru Getaway

  • Book the ferry before the room. One sailing each way, five days a week, fills up on long weekends
  • Check the waterpark notices on the official site for closed rides and the Tuesday closure
  • Read the beach flags. Red means stay out of the water, whatever the weather looks like from your balcony
  • Book direct if you choose Hard Rock, because that is what unlocks free waterpark access and the kids club
  • Ask Mandarin Oriental what is open on your dates while the refurbishment rolls out
  • Carry some ringgit for meals and outings outside the resorts, and ask about card payment before you order
  • Check cancellation terms, especially for November to March, when weather can change a beach plan

FAQ

How far is Desaru from Singapore?

Desaru Coast estimates about 1.5 hours by car from the Woodlands Checkpoint, plus border queue time. The BatamFast ferry from Tanah Merah takes about 1.5 hours, plus check in and immigration at both ends.

Is the Desaru ferry available every day?

No. The Tanah Merah to Desaru Coast ferry runs Thursday to Monday only, with one sailing each way: 10:10 from Tanah Merah and 17:30 from Desaru Coast, on the schedule effective 15 October 2026. Extra sailings are added over festive seasons and long weekends.

When is the best time to visit Desaru?

April to October, when the sea is usually calmer. From roughly November to February or March, the northeast monsoon brings rough surf and strong undercurrents, and sea swimming is dangerous, so plan around the resort pools in those months.

Is Desaru suitable for children?

Yes, especially at Hard Rock Hotel Desaru Coast, which connects directly to Adventure Waterpark and includes waterpark access when you book direct. Keep children out of the sea when red flags are up, and note that some larger slides have a 122 cm height minimum.

How many nights should you stay in Desaru?

One night is enough for one resort and one outing if you take the ferry, because the schedule gives you nearly two full days. Stay two nights if you want both the waterpark and the fruit farm, or if you are driving and want to avoid weekend border traffic.

How much is the ferry to Desaru?

S$70 one way or S$108 return per person, including terminal and departure fees, at BatamFast’s published fare checked 26 October 2026. The price is the same for all ages.

Our Verdict

Here is what we would do. Go on a Thursday or Sunday between April and October, take the 10:10 ferry, and book the resort that matches the trip: the Westin for a calm beachfront stay, Hard Rock booked direct if you have children, Anantara for a villa. Spend day one at the pool, eat seafood in the evening, and on day two pick one outing before the 17:30 ferry home. If your only dates fall in the monsoon, still go for the resort, but leave the swimming to the pool.
